Lab notebook
Most notebook entries describe an experiment in words. SLIM entries point at the real sample, the exact protocol version and the instrument, so the record still holds up when you, a reviewer or a new student comes back to it.
The problem
An entry says “used the usual plasmid, standard protocol”. Which tube? Which version of the protocol? The answer lived in somebody’s head, and that somebody has since moved on.
Entries name things in shorthand that nobody else can decode a year later.
The method has been edited since, and nobody knows which version was actually run.
A value gets corrected with no trace of what it was before, or who changed it.
Try it yourself

Mention a sample, a protocol, a project, an instrument or a person, and SLIM inserts the record itself, with its lot, position and QC status. The link stays live: open the vial later and you see every entry it was used in.

Washed with the ONT kit, then counted pores before loading: 640 active, against 1,190 on the first cell last week. Loaded the same library onto FC-1034.
Solves: “Standard protocol”
Inserting a protocol writes the chosen version into the entry as your own editable text. Improve the method next month and every older entry still says exactly what happened at the bench.
Solves: Quietly overwritten
Each entry carries a full version history you can read and restore. Deleted entries are archived, never destroyed, and closing or reopening an entry is recorded too.
Solves: being locked in
Every entry exports to PDF and plain Markdown, one at a time or the whole notebook in one file. No export fee, no exit interview.
